Hailing from Chicago’s renowned Wax Trax! Records stable of recording artists, MY LIFE WITH THE THRILL KILL KULT have been conjuring up sonic tales of sex, blasphemy and kitschy horror since 1987. Along with label mates such as Front 242, KMFDM and Ministry, TKK (as often abbreviated), helped develop the industrial music genre, but they themselves continued to evolve, creating one of the most diverse repertoires in modern day music. Their sound can be described as electronic rock, heavily influenced by both disco and funk. One of their most distinctive characteristics is the use of spoken-word samples lifted from B-movies laced throughout their songs. Since debuting, they have released 13 studio albums, and their music has been featured in a variety of films, television/cable shows and soundtracks, all the while making a reputation for themselves as one of the most notorious and controversial cult bands of their generation.

Artist Franke Nardiello and musician Marston Daley, two Chicago neighbors who enjoyed late night burritos while watching foreign horror movies on VHS rented from the corner store, began conspiring to make a trashy B movie (in the style of Russ Meyer and John Waters) to be called “My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult”. While the film itself never came to fruition, they also wrote some music to be the accompanying soundtrack. Both worked at Wax Trax! Records in Chicago, and when the label heard the tracks, they were intrigued and eager to release it.

The duo took the title of the film as the name for their band, and decided to focus on the musical group full time. Taking the stage names Groovie Mann (Nardiello) and Buzz McCoy (Daley), they worked on creating an occult-biker meets disco-rock influence look for the project, which included a bevy of voluptuous back-up singers and dancers known as the BOMB GANG GIRLZ. The New York Times wrote, “Sex, blasphemy, big beats and go-go dancing; they’re all in a day’s work for My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult ”. This attracted the attention of indie fans and the ire of religious groups in practically equal measure. They released their first album I See Good Spirits And I See Bad Spirits in 1988 followed up by the hard-hitting dance floor classics “Kooler Than Jesus” and “A Girl Doesn’t Get Killed By A Make-Believe Lover Cuz It’s Hot,” which featured no-wave chanteuse Lydia Lunch on vocals. By the time they released their second album, Confessions Of A Knife (1990), they were far and away one of the biggest selling acts on the label.

In 1991, the band embarked on the decadent “Sexplosion! Tour”, titled after their third album. Alternative Press reviewed the show as “Sin-sational!”. The tour was a success and the record sold so well that they signed a deal with Interscope Records shortly afterwards, and the single “Sex On Wheelz” became a sizeable radio hit.

Hollywood also embraced the group, recognizing the unique cinematic aspect of their sound. The band’s music has appeared in a slew of films and tv/cable shows including, director Ralph Bakshi’s “Cool World”, Paul Verhoven’s saucy “Showgirls”, MTV’s “Beavis And Butthead”, and the cult film classic “The Crow”, in which the ensemble make a cameo appearance performing their song “After The Flesh”. More recently the KULT was written into the story line of the 2014 film “Sexy Evil Genius” starring Seth Green.

THRILL KILL KULT continue to release new material via their own SleazeBox Records label (sleazebox.com) and tour extensively with a rotating cast of musicians and dubious characters, however the core of the project has always been Nardiello and Daley, both on record and in the live act. Their performances sizzle with sleaze and infectious grooves, as Melody Maker once described, “A red hot cabaret from Hell”.

They begin their 4th decade this year with the release of a new album, In The House Of Strange Affairs on February 14th, and a North American tour commencing May 5th in Las Vegas. Coming from Los Angeles with roots in the legendary Chicago Wax Trax! scene is the new duo Trash Deity. Combining the chaos and energy of the classic Wax Trax! sound updated with hard and modern production, Trash Deity is Groovie Mann aka Franke N. Nardiello (My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult and accomplished music producer and Industrial artist John D. Norten (Blue Eyed Christ). The debut Single, “Finger on a Trigger”, combined classic Groovie Mann vocals and cryptic lyrics with an infectious heavy electronic/guitar groove benefitting from Norten’s studio experience with major artists. The accompanying unique Music Video was comprised entirely of manipulated shots of paintings from the twisted imagination and eccentric mind of Groovie Mann. What was the earliest influence in your life that led you to a music career?

the vibrations from my mother’s record player that she kept under my crib. She was 19. – Groovie Mann

Nardiello’s informally structured and yet deeply storied career began with his first band, Special Affect, including Marti Sorenson & Harry Rushakoff (Concrete Blonde) with Al Jourgensen (Ministry) on guitar. Shortly after, he moved to London working with Simon Raymonde of Cocteau Twins with post-punk band Drowning Craze, recording a John Peel session in 1982. While touring with Ministry in 1986, he met and began working with Buzz McCoy (Marston Daley) to write a film titled Hammerhead Housewife and the Thrill Kill Kult, which was never filmed but ultimately evolved into TKK and an EP released with Wax Trax! Records. Over the next nearly 30 years, Groovie Mann has established his iconic reputation with TKK and contributed songs to several movie soundtracks, even appearing in the 1994 cult classic film The Crow. He’s also established himself as an accomplished painter in the LA art community. His uniquely abstract style offers a further peak into the mind and art of Groovie Mann and are sold to fans around the world.

What would you consider to be the ‘crossroads’ that directly led to you actively pursuing a musical career?

I would say my first Blue Eyed Christ record deal with KK Records in Belgium right out of High School for Leaders + Followers. It legitimized what I was doing for the first time and made me realize people outside of my bedroom studio may be interested in what I was doing.

John D. Norten also emerged from the 1990s Chicago Industrial scene as the leader of Blue Eyed Christ. The debut album, Leaders + Followers, was released internationally on Belgians classic EBM/Industrial label KK Records while still in his teens. Over the next few years, Blue Eyed Christ was featured on several prominent compilations and played the New Music Seminar in 1992 at the Limelight with Clock DVA and Chemlab. Blue Eyed Christ continued playing visceral live shows throughout the 90s and Norten continued recording at Chicago Trax Recording Studios working with established musicians and engineers from Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, and more. In 1996, Norten relocated to Los Angeles and has established himself as an in demand mixer and engineer for many of the biggest artists in the world including The Black Eyed Peas, Prince, CeeLo Green, and Lady GaGa.

How are you inspired to start a song and how does that develop from writing to composition, recording, and completion? What was the process for this project?

Jump into it -improvise with & without notes, laugh & cry & argue with the producer. – Groovie Mann

I usually start with the drums and music, but really anything can be the creative spark. When I first met with Groovie Mann he came over and I played him a bunch of instrumental tracks I had and he choose the ones that inspired him the most lyrically. He would write to them while he paints at home and then come over with notebooks full of ideas and inspirational goodies. Once we wrote the lyrics and recorded his vocals, I’d go back in and add more music and elements and we’d arrange that into the songs. The whole process was very organic. – JDN

Cross & Divide ultimately reflects both their shared roots as well as their unique and individual approaches to songwriting and recording. Groovie Mann’s spontaneous and poetic lyrical reactions to Norten’s carefully constructed song productions makes for a compelling mix of something new with enough of a nod to the past sure to please the old school fans and the newly initiated.

“No Mas Revolucion” depicts a cold realization about the big picture of the Venezuelan Crisis, as seen from an outside perspective which was granted to me as I left to live in the United States and now Germany.

“Revelation” is a personal statement inspired by the people who took stances both in favor and against Zardonic, both as myself and as my music project. It’s a celebration of the best revenge anyone can have against backstabbers, bad-mouthers, copycats and hypocrites: your own success.

It made perfect sense then, that The Qemists were the right act for this collaboration. We pay homage to the great artists before us, those who made it big, those unsung, Pendulum, The Prodigy, Celldweller, Ministry, Linkin Park, and all other great artists that contributed to bring Electronic fused Rock to the mainstream, and as the scene takes shape, you better be ready to brace for Takeover!

“Children Of Tomorrow” is an anthem for the resistance. For the people who have raised their voice as the system continues to oppress us. Many sadly took this fight to the streets and violence, leading eventually to riots and their deaths. This is our homage to them. Coppa did a wonderful job with the vocals and lyrics. He is a truly illuminated guy and one of the most genuine artists I’ve had the pleasure to work with. I’d gladly do an entire record with him!

“Before The Dawn” to me is a fanboy’s dream come true. Celldweller was the one artist I heard that blew my mind with his seamless mix of Metal and Electronic Dance Music back in 2003 when he released his Self-Titled debut album. Working with him is an absolute honor, especially because his vocals and lyrics fit the album concept wonderfully well. “Alone I pray for something I know will surely come, is this the dark before the dawn? I hear the voice that’s calling, says not to be afraid, fears that surround me fade away…”

“Follow The Light” continues on to follow the voice in Before The Dawn: “We reunite as the worlds collide. Fear is an illusion. We are your salvation. By eventide our journey begins, so heed the call and follow the light”. The worlds collide is a perfect analogy to our manipulated society. It pains me to see this, because I see the results of it in every aspect of our lives. How through fear people are led to create enemies out of fellow humans, and are capable of the worst atrocities against them. I have no idea if this will ever end, but I know I don’t want to be a part of the collide, so I follow the light above. The light that lets me see with real eyes what is going once you look at the big picture.

“Transhuman” is the ascension of our consciousness into a higher state of being. It is a slow, painful, confusing and chaotic process that requires breaking through paradigms deeply ingrained in our minds since the moment we are born. I took this concept to madman Jorgen Munkeby of the norwegian Blackjazz band SHINING who contributed with the most insane saxophone execution I have ever heard. He is an absolute genius!

“Army Of One” is the loud voice of frustration, anger and fear pulling back. A fear covered by a false fearlessness, for a man who truly has no fear has no need to attack or fight back. It’s easy to fall for it. The relentlessness of anger is very seductive. Pure, raw, unrestrained, and potentially devastating if not under control. Philosophical whatnots aside, I think this will make a great track for First Person Shooters!

“Monster” was the perfect counterpart for Army Of One. Originally a demo project by fellow producer Mario Malke who is an insanely talented Hard Techno producer, sound designer and drummer. He did it together with band APE. I liked how the lyrics say “the voices, we don’t need them at all” and “we’ve seen it all before”. Leaving anything behind always comes with a lot of pain, but once you’re on the other side, everything makes sense.

“Libertadores” is the final mourning of the dying world. It’s walking forward knowing that the pain might always linger, but there is no way to go but forward. To portray this, I based the song in the recent events of the Venezuelan rebellion, which ended in the assassination of Oscar Pérez with the use of a Rocket Launcher. Looking at this is something that still sends chills down my spine. How is it possible that men could carry such acts? What were their true motives? It’s not like we’re strangers to these atrocities as they have been very well documented, but one thing is to read a book or watch a documentary and another is to have it hit close to home. It is my farewell to the fight, my apology to the resistance and my homage to those who fell. I hope I never have to deal with it ever again.

BECOME is a very personal album. It is a journey of change, transition, resistance, self-reflection and evolution.
“No Mas Revolucion” depicts a cold realization about the big picture of the Venezuelan Crisis, as seen from an outside perspective which was granted to me as I left to live in the United States and now Germany.

What was the earliest influence in your life that led you to a music career?

the vibrations from my mother’s record player that she kept under my crib. She was 19. – Groovie Mann

Nardiello’s informally structured and yet deeply storied career began with his first band, Special Affect, including Marti Sorenson & Harry Rushakoff (Concrete Blonde) with Al Jourgensen (Ministry) on guitar. Shortly after, he moved to London working with Simon Raymonde of Cocteau Twins with post-punk band Drowning Craze, recording a John Peel session in 1982. While touring with Ministry in 1986, he met and began working with Buzz McCoy (Marston Daley) to write a film titled Hammerhead Housewife and the Thrill Kill Kult, which was never filmed but ultimately evolved into TKK and an EP released with Wax Trax! Records. Over the next nearly 30 years, Groovie Mann has established his iconic reputation with TKK and contributed songs to several movie soundtracks, even appearing in the 1994 cult classic film The Crow. He’s also established himself as an accomplished painter in the LA art community. His uniquely abstract style offers a further peak into the mind and art of Groovie Mann and are sold to fans around the world.

What would you consider to be the ‘crossroads’ that directly led to you actively pursuing a musical career?

I would say my first Blue Eyed Christ record deal with KK Records in Belgium right out of High School for Leaders + Followers. It legitimized what I was doing for the first time and made me realize people outside of my bedroom studio may be interested in what I was doing.

John D. Norten also emerged from the 1990s Chicago Industrial scene as the leader of Blue Eyed Christ. The debut album, Leaders + Followers, was released internationally on Belgians classic EBM/Industrial label KK Records while still in his teens. Over the next few years, Blue Eyed Christ was featured on several prominent compilations and played the New Music Seminar in 1992 at the Limelight with Clock DVA and Chemlab. Blue Eyed Christ continued playing visceral live shows throughout the 90s and Norten continued recording at Chicago Trax Recording Studios working with established musicians and engineers from Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, and more. In 1996, Norten relocated to Los Angeles and has established himself as an in demand mixer and engineer for many of the biggest artists in the world including The Black Eyed Peas, Prince, CeeLo Green, and Lady GaGa.

How are you inspired to start a song and how does that develop from writing to composition, recording, and completion? What was the process for this project?

Jump into it -improvise with & without notes, laugh & cry & argue with the producer. – Groovie Mann

I usually start with the drums and music, but really anything can be the creative spark. When I first met with Groovie Mann he came over and I played him a bunch of instrumental tracks I had and he choose the ones that inspired him the most lyrically. He would write to them while he paints at home and then come over with notebooks full of ideas and inspirational goodies. Once we wrote the lyrics and recorded his vocals, I’d go back in and add more music and elements and we’d arrange that into the songs. The whole process was very organic. – JDN

Cross & Divide ultimately reflects both their shared roots as well as their unique and individual approaches to songwriting and recording. Groovie Mann’s spontaneous and poetic lyrical reactions to Norten’s carefully constructed song productions makes for a compelling mix of something new with enough of a nod to the past sure to please the old school fans and the newly initiated.

Hailing from Chicago’s renowned Wax Trax Records stable of recording artists, MY LIFE WITH THE THRILL KILL KULT creators Groovie Mann (Franke Nardiello) and Buzz McCoy (Marston Daley) have been conjuring up sonic tales of sex, blasphemy and kitschy horror since 1987. Though often categorized as a pioneering industrial band along with label mates MINISTRYKMFDM and FRONT 242, their true sound can be described more as a concoction of experimental, disco, rock, electronica and lounge, interlaced with their signature sampling of spoken dialogue largely taken from old B-movies. In fact, the original intent was to write and produce a trashy thriller film in the style of John Waters and Russ Meyers. Yet without much cinema experience and access to video equipment, the project was scrapped, only to be transformed into a musical group of the same name – something both had more expertise in. Nardiello fronted the late 70’s Chicago bands THE DT’S and SPECIAL AFFECT, as well as singing for the post-punk British outfit DROWNING CRAZE. Daley attended Berklee College Of Music, but quickly realized a formal education in jazz was not for him. He left school in 1981 to co-found the art-punk Boston group ZERO ZERO, and later the more goth-electronic oriented GODBOX before relocating to Chicago in 1987.

TKK’s debut album I See Good Spirits And I See Bad Spirits was released in 1989 and the next few years were spent touring extensively with an entourage of dubious musicians, shocking performance artists, and a back-up trio of voluptuous singers/dancers dubbed the BOMB GANG GIRLZ. The shows had a “Cabaret From Hell” vibe, arousing the curiosity of the kids and the media.

The band’s popularity among the underground club scene was fueled by hard-hitting dance tracks with titles like “Kooler Than Jesus”, “Do You Fear For Your Child”, “A Girl Doesn’t Get Killed By A Make-Believe Lover Cuz It’s Hot” (featuring punk poet chanteuse LYDIA LUNCH), and “A Daisy Chain 4 Satan”. The Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) was appalled.

Their third album Sexplosion! (1991) spawned the chart-topping, radio savvy song “Sex On Wheelz” which quickly caught the attention of the major labels, and the band signed to Interscope Records in 1992. Like all of their releases, the album had an overpowering cinematic quality, so it wasn’t surprising when Hollywood also took notice. They found themselves writing for an assortment of soundtracks like Paul Verhoeven’s SHOWGIRLS and animator Ralph Bakshi’s COOL WORLD. The video to their 1993 single “Blue Buddha” was prominently featured in MTV’s classic series BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD. In 1994, they stepped in front of the camera for a cameo in the cult classic THE CROW to perform the song “After The Flesh”. More recently THRILL KILL KULT was written into the story line of the 2013 film SEXY EVIL GENIUSstarring Seth GreenKatee Sackoff and William Baldwin. Their music can be heard frequently in movies, television and cable shows, such as HBO’s long running, REAL SEX series, Showtime’s CALIFORNICATION and most recently in the indie flick CRAZY EYES.

MY LIFE WITH THE THRILL KILL KULT’S sound has always been fearlessly experimental, and has been directly credited for influencing many of today’s artists from MARILYN MANSON to the SCISSOR SISTERS. The group continues to morph and stretch the fabric of music and as we know it, changing styles and exploring new sonic avenues with each new album, yet always remaining true to the KULT and true innovators.
